Best games for long distance relationships

Love knows no bounds, and sometimes, these bounds are quite literal.
With a world so connected than ever before we can easily find ourselves in one of the more difficult types of relationships, the long distance relationship.

Whether your special someone lives in another state or you had to go on that temporary out of town job. Heck, you might just meet your true love online!
Life tends to take us down unexpected paths, and sometimes we find ourselves apart from our loved ones for a short, or in some cases, a lengthy period of time.

Luckily, Technology is a perfect crutch for this problem.
Lengthy phone calls, texting, video chats, sharing pictures and such can make these relationships alive and less distant but sometimes even these things don’t cut it as we miss the ability to simply doing activities together, one of the core things in a healthy relationship and that’s where video games can come into play.
While not being the real thing, we can still enjoy various activities through these virtual worlds that give the relationship another dimension we dearly miss.
So with that being said, we listed the best games for long distance relationship you can play with your loved one’s today.

Diablo 3

PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PC and Mac

One of the qualities we look for while choosing games for this list is games that we can really sink our teeth in and this one, well, let’s just say its one big juicy steak.
Diablo 3 is a dungeon crawler action RPG where you choose one of eight classes, fighting hordes of monsters through various worlds while completing quests, upgrading your character with an intricate leveling system and always on the hunt for better loot.
This game is so addictive! With the recent updates, this game is much more streamlined and easy to digest.
Simple game mechanics and a refined looting system make Diablo 3 enjoyable to almost anybody who knows his way with a controller or a mouse and keyboard on a very basic level.
It offers both a carefree playing experience and if you want to dive a little bit deeper, it can get much more complicated with harder difficulties and numerous character builds.
With looting and gear being the heart of this game, Diablo 3 never seems to let go of its grasp over our controller as we always search for the next awesome gear piece to make us even stronger.
Diablo 3 is clearly designed with co-op in mind, and everything regarding playing this game together seems to be well thought out.
Matching difficulty and levels between different players, an easy trading system and a balanced loot distribution are just a few examples of how smoothly this game plays in co-op mode.
Also, co-op comes into play beautifully as you explore the synergies between classes and abilities and overcoming more tougher enemies.
You can play this game on almost every console, and that’s a significant advantage for our purpose, but we recommend playing this game on a PlayStation or Xbox console as the playing experience with a controller is slightly more streamlined.

World of Warcraft

PC and Mac

Continuing the RPG line, this one is an obvious gold mine. While much more complex, this one gives us an almost infinite time sink to enjoy each others company while exploring this fantastical world.
This MMO Titan is one of the most played out games even until this day, and the reasons are loud and clear.

Playing this game religiously a few years back, I gained and maintained many friendly relationships with people around the world I could never have done otherwise and all because we shared the same experience and activities in this beautiful universe.

World of Warcraft offers a great experience for both novice players and experienced players in the RPG genre. Simply leveling up in this game together will give you countless hours of pure joy as you reach the end game where the game really opens up with PvP modes and big scale raids you will surely enjoy experiencing with a partner beside you.

The game runs on both Mac and Windows at reasonably low minimum system requirements which make this game highly accessible and a great entry to this list.

Divinity: Original Sin II

PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC

Since we are on a roll with RPG games, we had to mention this one, and it seems to be the extreme end of this genre.
Although this game is not as easy to digest as the other iterations to this list if you do get to wrap your head around this one you will surely strike gold.

While the first game on the franchise got its fair share of praises, Divinity: Original Sin II is one of the highest scored games in recent years, executing one of the best turn-based RPGs ever created.

Divinity: Original Sin II offers an in-depth character creation, meaningful choices, excellent storytelling and a rewarding combat system that are all combined into a lengthy and highly enjoyable experience.

Where the game shines most, and the reason its even on this list, is its robust co-op mode. The games main campaign can be played with up to 4 players, locally or online, giving the game another huge dimension to how the story will unfold.

Each player is free to act, move and speak individually without being tethered to the other companions which makes playing together a much more exciting and beneficial, allowing you to cover a lot of ground and experience the story from different perspectives.

With a vast world to explore, countless sidequests to experience and over 100 hours of gameplay, this is a game that will go a very long and thrilling way for you and your partner.

Don’t Starve Together

PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Linux, PC and Mac

A sequel of sorts to the popular Don’t Starve franchise which adds a highly requested multiplayer mode to this ruthless survival game.
In Don’t Starve Together your sole objective is to survive as long as you possibly can in the wilderness.
Scavenging for food, fending off monsters, crafting tools and building a camp to keep you cozy at night.

Surviving with other companions has its own set of challenges. While making multitasking easier with more working hands, scavenging for food and supplies is even harder when splitting with other players.
Smartly directing roles for each player is crucial to surviving the unforgiving world of Don’t Starve and that’s why co-op is so engaging.
The replayability of this game is very high, and if it gets its hooks on you, you’ll surely sink many hours before you’ll find this game repetitive.

You can find Don’t Starve Together on most consoles, PC, Mac and with low minimum requirements you probably already have a machine that can run this game and start playing together.

A Way Out

PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC

Probably the shortest game on the list but we had so much fun playing this one (Like we already mentioned in our Best games for couples article) we just had to put this on this list as well.

A Way Out is a co-op only narrative-based adventure game where you take the role of two prisoners escaping jail and surviving as fugitives.

Each character has a different background with a different personality type that you can pick at the start of the game.
As the story unfolds you learn more about your character and develop more empathy towards him which makes some decisions harder than others, especially when it comes to choosing a course of action that’s more in tune with one of the players.

It’s a thrilling journey that requires cooperation and communication at all times, from action-packed blockbuster scenes to intimate narrative scenes this will keep you and your partner engaged through the entirety of the game for sure.

A big bonus for this game is the ability only to buy one copy and invite another player to play with you for free. This generous offer makes this game even more accessible, and a must buy for anyone who seeks an exciting and fun experience with a partner online.

Borderlands: The Handsome Collection

PlayStation 4 and Xbox One

Another game taken from our Best games for couples article and for several good reasons.

Borderlands is an FPS game with RPG elements that takes place in a wild and bizarre universe divided into different regions with unique environments and enemies. The games general vibe is pretty light-hearted that doesn’t take itself too seriously, as opposed to most FPS games on the market, which makes it a perfect game for all types of players.

Combining light RPG mechanics like skill trees and inventory management gives the game depth without overcomplicating things, especially when co-op comes into play where you can create smart and effective class synergies and trade off items to boost each other up.

The collection comes with both Borderlands 2 and Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, two meaty games full of content, so you can be sure this one will keep you up and running for many online sessions with your partner.

Fortnite & PUBG

PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Switch (Fornite), PC, Mac (Fortnite), Android and IOS

Placing these two games in the same line might not be the most correct thing to do, but for this lists purpose I believe they do go together.

Battle Royale games took the world of gaming by a storm in the last year, the idea is infectious and the moment to moment gameplay offers you endless scenarios that will rarely feel repetitive.
What’s more infectious is squadding up with a partner or a couple of friends to work out together to the top.

Both games share the same concept, battle through 100 players in a big open map as the play area gradually shrinks down, pushing all the players to a random area until only one player or squad survives and if you die in the process, you are out.

The difference between these two extremely popular games is mainly the pace and some core mechanics and we highly encourage trying out both to see what more fits your style (we currently play both games).

Fortnite: Battle Royale is a fast-paced, high-intensity battle royale with a building mechanic that completely shifts the combat in traditional battle royale games. Mastering the building mechanic might be tough at first but once you get it makes the games diverse and interesting as every confrontation with another player can resolve in countless ways.
The style of the game is light-hearted with a slew of skins and iconic dance moves that makes the game feel more inviting to newcomers, Especially with rapid updates that always shake the game up and gives a chance for new players to succeed.

PlayUnknown’s Battlegrounds considered to be one of the pioneers of the battle royale genre with a more realistic approach to combat.
As opposed to Fortnite, PUBG is a slower paced game with a strategic approach. The game encourages several gameplay approaches with different weapon types and many weapon mod options which makes player synergy a key to success if you are playing together.
Like Fortnite, PUBG has a steep learning curve but once you get it the game offers countless hours of gameplay galore.

You can find both games on almost every console on the market, with the addition of a mobile version for both games that works surprisingly great so you probably already have a machine that can run one of these games, and that’s a huge plus for this addition to the list.

And that concludes our list for now, do you have any games you feel that deserve to be on this list? do you have any interesting stories or moments that happened online with your partner or friend? Please feel free to hit us up on the comment section below and share this article with anyone who can find it useful.
