Best co op game announcements at E3 2018 thumbnail

Every year, we get to experience one of the most exciting events in video games media, E3.
Some call it “Christmas for gamers” and we couldn’t agree more with that term.
Witnessing some of the most anticipated games in action, new game reveals behind every corner,
jaw-dropping trailers and industry changing announcements from the biggest developers and publishers in the world.
It’s that time of the year we’ve all been waiting for, and one of the things that makes the world of gaming so exciting.
With the barrage of juicy news coming at us from every corner, it ain’t hard to miss some fascinating game reveals that dearly deserves our attention, especially some of smaller titles that are shadowed by the greatest titans of the industry.

At Couchdwellerz, we are always on the hunt for specific games we can enjoy together, whether its couch co-op or games that are the most enjoyable when played with our loved ones and in this E3, we feel like we’ve struck gold.
With this in mind, We took the time and sifted through the countless game reveals and summed up our biggest takeaways for co-op games shown at E3 2018.

Overcooked 2

PS4, SWITCH, XBOX ONE and PC
August 7th, 2018

I cannot explain how thrilled we were when this beloved title popped up on the Nintendo Direct.
Overcooked 2, the sequel to the highly praised Overcooked game we already covered in our best games for couples article, looks even more chaotic and amusing than its predecessor, with a bunch of new recipes, new mechanics, a variety of new and challenging kitchens and a highly requested online co-op functionality.
Overcooked got us spending countless hours of pure enjoyment strategizing the best way to earn that perfect score without burning down the house, so we cannot be more delighted to see this franchise with an even bigger scope than ever before.

Unravel 2

PS4, Xbox One and PC
Out now

With Electronic Art’s somewhat predictable showcase, this was easily the biggest announcement from their conference, Especially with it being released surprisingly on the same day.
A sequel to the hit indie title Unravel -released back in 2016-, Unravel 2 takes you on the wondrous journey of the odd and beloved Yarny through 7 different picturesque levels. Similarly to the original game, Being made out of yarn, Yarny uses his abilities to rappel, climb, pull and swing to overcome various clever puzzles and platforming challenges through each level.
The main addition to the franchise is the introduction of a second character controlled by another player, making you team up with a partner to take on even more elaborate challenges than the prequel offered.
We can’t wait to jump in and experience this unique game together with this introduction of co-op element to this praised franchise.

Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! / Pokémon: Let’s Go, Eevee! Trailer

SWITCH
November 16th, 2018

Since the Switch’s release, we’ve been anxiously waiting for the next Pokemon title to drop so we can finally enjoy this franchise on the go.
On a press conference just a couple of days before E3 we got to see the next iteration of the franchise, Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Pokémon: Let’s Go, Eevee! and we couldn’t be more hyped.
While not being a traditional installment of the franchise and being more akin to Pokemon Go this game got us excited nevertheless, especially with co-op being introduced for the first time ever to the franchise.
In this new Pokemon title we get to go back into the classic Kanto region from Pokemon Yellow, reimagined for the Switch.
First gen Pokemon from Pokemon Go can be transferred from your mobile device to your Switch, making these two games interact simultaneously.
Catching Pokemon seems to be similar to how you catch Pokemon in Pokemon go, using the Joycon’s motion sensor to throw the Pokeball at the perfect timing and direction.
Battling against trainers remains the same as in the core series, using turn based RPG mechanics and different attacks with each Pokemon.
Drop in co-op mechanics will be available for the first time, letting you and a partner roam Kanto and catch pokemon, trade and battle NPC’s together.
While not being exactly the Pokemon game we were wishing for, this game makes us hopeful for the future core Pokemon game to include co-op elements so we can enjoy the full Pokemon experience together.

The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit

PS4, XBOX ONE and PC
June 26th

While not being a co-op game, we love playing these narrative-based games together.
The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit, a 100% free standalone game, is a sort of a prequel to the already announced Life is Strange 2 and will affect this game based on decisions and actions you take.
This stand-alone spinoff will let you play the role of the young hero Chris, an imaginative kid dealing with what seems to be a harsh reality.
Captain Spirit introduces lots of superhero themes and super powers, which isn’t something unfamiliar to the Life is Strange universe, and that will surely tie into Life is Strange 2.
There is very little we know about this game from the trailer we saw, but from playing Life is Strange (a game we already covered before) we trust Dontnod Entertainment to delivery a touching interactive story that will only make us hungrier for the sequel.

Cuphead: The Delicious Last Course

Xbox One and PC
TBA 2019

One of the more jolly announcements at Microsoft’s press conference was the reveal of the unique and adorable platformer Cuphead, Cuphead: The Delicious Last Course.
The DLC will include a brand new playable character “Ms. Chalice”, New weapons, New shopkeepers, New bosses and a brand new isle to explore and challenge us with its difficult and frantic gameplay elements.
Similar to the main game, you can team up with a partner to take on this somewhat difficult game.
We love to see this game expands further, Being one of the most beautifully designed games we’ve seen in recent years.

Super Mario Party

Switch
October 05, 2018

Announced at Nintendo’s E3 Direct, The Mario Party series is making its way to the Switch this October.
Though this announcement was pretty obvious it did not drop our hype level even by a bit, As the Switch seems so fitting for this franchise.
Take on up to 4 contenders with a new and deeper playing board, Newly introduced specific dice blocks for each character and a new party system.
The game will include 80 mini games to challenge your friends with new and creative uses of the Joycon controller.
On top of that, if you add into the mix another Switch system you can pair up and play new mini games that utilize both screens like the new “Toad’s Rec Room” shown in this E3 trailer.
Having this franchise finally making his way to our Switch is one of the best news we got this E3 and we can’t wait to clash against each other in one of Nintendo’s more inventive series.

Fortnite Switch edition

PS4, Xbox One, Switch, Mac, PC and IOS
Out Now

No, it’s not a couch co-op game we know, but with so many systems running this game you probably already have two of those in your household (Although PS4 players did take a blow from the recent cross-play controversy).
One of the most successful titles in gaming history is finally making its way to the Switch, a console we just can’t get enough from, to open up even more possibilities to experience this addictive game and we are surely hoping on this train,
We can’t wait to combo up and cross play to victory!

And that’s our E3 summary! With this year’s conference being so overwhelming we just couldn’t wait to cover what we saw and share our excitement with our readers. Did we miss anything? With so many announcements we surely did… Feel free to hit us up on the comment section and share this article with anyone who needs this summary to clear their vision once this magnificent E3’s dust is settled.
